The Lake of the Woods Township Council met for their regular meeting on May 2 at Morson. Present were Mayor Pizey, Councillors T. Sepers, C. Fadden, B. Lundgren, and J. Moen, Clerk-Treasurer P. Giles, Road Supt. E. Pearson, and Fire Chief C. Pollard. Visitors Cliff Gaudry and Sharon Joseph asked that brushing be done on Ottilee Rd.
Bills in the amount of $66,786.47 were approved for payment.
Fire Chief Pollard updated Council on the Fire Dept.and the requirements for the Municipal Fire Protection Information Survey. He stated that some of the firemen were interested in starting fundraising for the department and were questioning whether the Fire Dept could fundraise using lotteries. Clerk Giles advised that the answer must come from the AGCO. Fire Permits are being issued at the Bergland General Store.
Road Supt. Pearson reported that the garbage cage on Lighthouse Rd. had been fixed and that W. Reimund is to remove the unsightly vehicle on the corner of Hwy 621 and 600. After an extensive review and discussion of the Road Patrol report, Council tried to prioritize the work which had to be done. Deciding that it would take more time than they had this meeting, Council will meet again on that report. Council has authorized Road Supt. Pearson to attend an auction for used graders.
Councillor Sepers updated Council on the Rec.Committee activities. A movie night for adults is planned for May 12 at 7pm at the Morson Hall - “Walk the Line” (the Johnny Cash Story) will be shown. Council approves the Rec.Committee’s plan to meet with parents to discuss building safe and proper ramps for young skateboarders and BMX’ers.Clerk Giles advised that someone had questioned about the Rec Committee having liquor licenses and he has referred that issue to the AGCO to clarify the Committee’s eligibility.
Clerk Giles reported that Anishinaabeg of Naongashiing has written a letter asking to have their contractor dump garbage at the Morson dump. Mayor Pizey and C. Fadden declared an interest. B. Lundgren took the Chair. Council authorized Clerk Giles to advise this FN that due to the limited life of the Morson dump, garbage from outside the municipality cannot be permitted in that dump.
Clerk Giles reported that the MMAH has removed the Section 118 on the Miner property and the building permit will be reinstated. The Government dock transfer has been completed, it is now registered in LoW Twp. name and funding has been received for repairs. Information on recycling from Asselin Transport was presented - it is expensive. It was suggested that this could possibly be a “shared service”. Further discussion on this matter was tabled until next meeting. Anishinaabeg of Naongashiing will be asked for a list of residents for the dump attendant and permitting purposes. These residents can use the dump for household garbage under the annual fee paid by the First Nation. The AGCO lottery seminar slated for May 18 in Rainy River has been postponed until September. The cell tower is up in Morson and other work is being done on it at present. It probably won’t be in operation before Fall because the signal has to be off the Bergland and other towers. It is not possible to use the OPP tower for signal purposes. Who knows when the Bergland tower is going up. Coca Cola has offered to place 2 coolers in the Bergland Hall. Council will accept them provided there is no cost nor obligation to the Municipality
