RRHS soccer teams ready for NORWOSSAs
Ken Johnston
It was another kick-butt weekend for the Rainy River High School soccer teams!
The boys team travelled to Dryden for another weekend of exhibition games. They played Red Lake and won 2-1, Sioux Lookout and won 2-0 and Kenora (T.A.) and tied 1-1. That left them tied for first with T.A. RRHS will now face Red Lake in the first round of the NORWOSSA’s this Thursday in Kenora. If they win that game they advance to the finals. Scoring for the boys was Joel Ashworth (4) and Andrew Friesen (1). Ashworth has 12 goals on the season and is literally on fire. “No one else is even close to him in the league,” said RRHS Athletic Director Guy Arpin.
In girls action the girls were equally impressive on the field. They beat Red Lake 3-0, tied Sioux Lookout 0-0 and lost to T.A. 0-2. Scoring for RRHS was Kate Bartlett (1), Nikki Dorrie (1) and Tiffany Marinaro (1). Molly Bartlett also had two shutouts. The girls face Sioux Lookout in NORWOSSAs Thursday and if they win will be in finals. Since T.A. is hosting OFSAAs this year they automatically get berth into the All Ontarios. If RRHS meets them in the NORWOSSA finals they will get an automatic berth into NWOSAAs in Wawa.
Both teams were scheduled to play Fort Frances over the weekend but both games were cancelled.
