Ball season begins
Ken Johnston
Rainy River’s fastball season started last Tuesday with Stratton visiting the defending league champs from last year.
Both teams played tight defense in the first three innings with only three Stratton players making it on base and two RR players doing the same.
In the fourth Stratton pitcher Guy Arpin hit a double off RR’s Murray Armstrong. Then Armstrong struck out the next player and Curtis Shelloff hit an infield ball to be thrown out at first. Then with two out Ted Heyens stepped up to the plate and hit a single to score Arpin and give Stratton a 1-0 lead.
Both teams then hunkered down again playing without errors and keeping base-runners to a minimum. It was not until the top of the sixth inning before another run would be notched on the score board.
Arpin again hit a double and was belted in by a single from Bert Anderson. In the bottom of the sixth Don Gall hit a homer to close the lead to 2-1.
But that would be all the scoring for the game. Stratton won 2-1.
Rainy River did bounce back from the loss on Thursday defeating Big Grassy at home 6-1.
