Women’s Institute to present Good Citizenship Award

Ruth Brett
LoW W.I.

The Lake of the Woods (Bergland) Women’s Institute met for their May meeting at the Bergland Hall with Marjorie Meek as hostess. Eight members answered roll call, which continues to be “Pennies for Friendship” until the new program booklet is ready.
A change was made to the 2006-07 slate of Executive Officers, with Ruth Brett taking the positions of PRO and ROSE Coordinator.
The 2006 Area Convention in Dryden on September 8 & 9 was touched on briefly; so far only 1 member is able to go this year.
LoW Branch is again presenting the Good Citizenship Award to a deserving Grade 8 student at McCrosson-Tovell School.
Flowers will be planted at the Bergland Cemetery and some members of the community will be approached for help in completing the Quiet Garden.
In memory of Alice Pentney, a rose will be planted at the RR Hospital.
Branch members continue to discuss the issue of the lack of Christ in Christmas. It was noted that most cards now say only “Season’s Greetings” or “Happy Holidays”. Even the spelling of Christmas in some instances has changed to “Xmas”. Members will collect evidence of this trend - cards, newspaper ads, letters and pictures - and will try to properly word a resolution and present it at the 2007 District Annual meeting.
The LoW WI annual Bake Sale and Flea Market will be held on June 10 from 9am to 12noon at the School in Bergland. The word (on good authority) is that furniture and many other good things will be available at the Flea Market. Everyone is invited to come and buy a pie.
The June meeting will be held on the 19th at Ruth Huntley’s home in Rainy River. There will be a pot luck dinner before the meeting.
