Sea Cadets hold 50th annual review

The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Fort Frances held their 50th-annual ceremonial review on Saturday at the Emo-La Vallee Arena.
After an inspection and the march past, the cadets gave a drill demonstration. Then they displayed their presentations, offering information on sailing, knots, and uniforms to those gathered.
As well, awards and presentations were made as follows:
•Top new recruit of the year (female), sponsored by Royal Canadian Legion Br. #99 in Emo—presented by Comrade Jacquelyn Hunsperger to Ordinary Cadet Brianne Dixon;
•Top new recruit of the year (male), sponsored by Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 in Fort Frances—presented by Comrade Glen Westover to Ordinary Cadet Daniel Cunningham;
•Esprit de Corps, sponsored by Royal Canadin Legion Br. #54 in Rainy River—presented by Martin Steinbach, VFW Post #2948 in International Falls, to Leading Cadet George Kemper-Lukasevics;
•Top fitness award, sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken in Fort Frances—presented to Petty Officer First Class Shane Ikert;
•Teamwork, leadership and attitude award, sponsored by the OPP—presented by Cst. Guy Beaudry to Petty Officer First Class Emmanuel Whiting;
•Core values award, sponsored by Canada Border Services Agency—presented by Supt. Kim Beaudry to Able Cadet Ryan Goertzen;
•Top cadet of the year, sponsored by West End Motors—presented by Lt(N) (retired) Edward Haglund CD to Petty Officer First Class Emmanuel Whiting; and
•Navy cadet good dervice medal—awarded to PO2 Mitchell Gallinger, QPO1 Kyle Jewett, PO2 Donald Matheson, PO1 Emmanual Whiting, PO1 Austin Zin, and PO1 Shane Ikert.
Commanding Officer Lt(N) Terry Newman also presented ceremonial paddles to past commanding officers Lt(N) Cecile Lavigne and Lt(N) William Zroback CD (retired) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the corps.
Ceremonial paddles also were presented by the commanding officer to Petty Officer First Class Emmaunel Whiting for his service provided to the corps, and to Reviewing Officer Lt(N) Edward Haglund CD (retired).
Newman also received the Canadian Forces decoration for 12 years’ of service from Lt(N) William Zroback CD (retired).
In addition, many of the cadets received certificates offering promotions within the corps:
•Ordinary Cadet (OC) to Able Cadet (AC)—Daniel Cunningham, Brianne Dixon, Emily Shoemaker, and Adam Sliworsky.
•Able Cadet (AC) to Leading Cadet (LC)—Amanda Beauregard, Shane Dixon, Ryan Goertzen, and Matthew Johnson.
•Leading Cadet (LC) to Petty Officer Second Class (PO2)—George Kemper-Lukasevics and Ashley Sharp.
•Petty Officer Second Class (PO2) to Qualified Petty Officer First Class (QPO1)—Donald Matheson and Matthew Smeeth.
•Qualified Petty Officer First Class (QPO1) to Petty Officer First Class—Kyle Jewett.
•Petty Officer First Class (PO1) to Chief Petty Officer Second Class (CPO2)—Shane Ikert, Emmanuel Whiting, and Austin Zin.
A dinner followed the ceremony, along with a few more gifts and presentations.
The next season for the local Sea Cadets will begin in September.
