Rainy extends winning streak
Ken Johnston
After losing their first game of the season, the Rainy River Legion Royals have won every game to sit tied with Sight and Sound of Fort Frances for first place.
Last Tuesday Big Island visited RR and nearly did not get to play. They were short two players and ended up picking up former Pinewood Bear Kyle Langlais and had a woman play half an inning.
Big Island’s Shawn Comegan cranked one over the fence to open the scoring 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
RR’s Marty Armstrong answered in the bottom of the second with a double. Two batters later Joel Ashworth hit a single with one out. Walter Wagner then struck out sending Matt Bartlett to the plate. He smacked a triple and earned two R.B.I.s. A fly out by Rick Tymkin ended the inning with RR leading 2-1.
However their lead would be shortlived as Big Island scored one in the top of the third to tie it. But RR slugger Jim Chorney was having none of that knocking one out of the park to take the lead back for RR 3-2 after three innings.
Big Island then would tie it in the fourth when Kyle Langlais hit a triple and was later sacrifice flied in.
The game would stay tied 3-3 right through the regulation seven innings. In the bottom of the 8th Marty Armstrong was walked. Wes Blight then hit a sac. bunt to advance him. Joel Ashworth then hit a single moving Marty to third. The last batter of the game knew what he had to do. Mitch Gouliquer hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Armstrong and win the game 4-3.
Thursday RR travelled to Fort Frances and defeated Sight and Sound 6-5.
Tonight RR hosts International Falls.
