George Hilton Brumwell, 85

It is with great sadness that the family of the Hilton Brumwell announces his passing on Thursday, August 3, 2006 at the Rainy River Hospital at the age of 85.
Hilton was born on December 27, 1920 in Scarborough, ON to the late Isaac and Velma Brumwell. In 1929 the family moved to the Roblin, Manitoba area were they settled to farm. Hilton enlisted in the Army in 1939 and was sent overseas in 1940 spending the next four years in England. In 1944 he was transferred to Italy where he joined the 48th Highlanders. During a skirmish in Twello, Holland he was wounded and left behind by his comrades while they procured help. During his stay in a local home he met the love of his life Hendricka (Ricky) Verbeek. He returned to Holland following the war and they were united in marriage on February 4, 1950. Together they came back to Canada, settling in the Roblin area. They farmed there for many years before moving to Rainy River in 1967. They once again took up farming; Hilton also worked for the Rainy River First Nations for several years in the Wild Rice Patties north of Rainy River. Hilton loved to work the land whether it was tending to the garden, harvesting grapes or calving. He was a founding member of the Rainy River Ontario Farmers Association and a very active member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was also a past member of the Moose Lodge in Baudette. He was a proud Scotsman who was often spotted in one of his many kilts.
He was predeceased by his wife Ricky on December 16, 2001; son Eric, great grandson Zander and brothers Roy and Grant.
Hilton leaves behind his children Johanna Wenden of Edmonton, AB, Marion Brumwell of Rainy River, Sandra Brumwell (Jim) of Kenora, Roy (Carol) Brumwell of Lethbridge, AB, Jeanni Brumwell (Armond) of Kenora and Andrew (Nicole) Brumwell of Rainy River; grandchildren Roger, Sheri, William, Donald, Michael, Charles, Jarrod, Ricki, Emma, Danielle, Bryer, Katrina, Gavin, Trista and Cameron; great grandchildren Stephen, Jessica, Perry and Mya; siblings Marion Hagerman, Melvin Brumwell, Eugene Brumwell and Marguerite Breen as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August, 9, 2006 from noon until 1 p.m. at the Rainy River Funeral Home in Rainy River, ON.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Rainy River United Church in Rainy River, ON. Reverend Barbara Miller will officiate with interment in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River, ON.
The pallbearers were members of the Fort Frances Highlanders.
