Local girl touted as one of the area’s most promising volleyball players

Could there be a pro volleyball player in our midst? Nicole Olson, daughter of Jackie Delvecchio and Damon Delvecchio of Rainy River, has been identified by a major newspaper in the U.S. as someone to watch. In last Friday’s Grand Forks Herald she was listed as one of 12 girls to watch and was called one of the area’s top volleyball players. Olson, who attends Lake of the Woods School in Baudette, is a senior middle hitter and lead the girls volleyball team last year who finished 31-4 on the season and won the state tournament. She had a team high of 379 kills and 127 blocks. In addition as being touted as one to watch, Olson was also featured in a separate article in the Herald talking about her being from Minnesota but living in Canada. In that article her coach, Laurie Bitter was quoted as saying, “Without her, we probably wouldn’t have won state.” Olson’s stepfather, Damon Delvecchio, said several schools have showed an interest in Nicole with scholarship bells a ringing.
“Who knows where it will lead but she is good,” he remarked. Nicole has one more year of high school and the team looks strong for this year having only lost three players from last year.
