Melba Yvonne (nee Steele) Slack

With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Melba Yvonne Slack on Sunday, August 27, 2006 in the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 80 years.
She was predeceased by her parents Lawrence and Violet Steele, her sister Viola Beland, brother Vernon Steele and brothers-in-law Joseph Beland and Clifford Underwood. Melba will be lovingly remembered by her husband Floyd of Portage la Prairie; children Lawrence (Linda), Ken and Evelyn Slack and granddaughter Shannon (Kory) Matthews all of Winnipeg; sister Marion Underwood of Regina, SK along with many nieces and nephews.
Melba was born on February 18, 1926 in Rudell SK and moved with her family to Rainy River ON in 1956. She married Floyd on October 19, 1947 in Elva, MB and together they raised their three children. Melba worked at several jobs including the Co-op Creamery and the IGA Grocery Store. She was a devoted working mom always making sure that family was her first priority. In her younger years, she loved to go fishing and camping and in these later years she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, card games and solving puzzles of all kinds. Melba was a very caring, patient person and will truly be missed.
Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 2:00 pm with Rev. Julie Baker officiating.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Melba’s memory to Canadian Diabetes Association, 102 – 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6 or charity of your choice.
A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Melba by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
