Rainy River High School retained all its teaching staff except one this year and that teacher, Jim Chorney moved up the ladder to Vice-principal.
Replacing Chorney is Stephen Redican. This is Redican’s first teaching position after graduating from Trent University in Peterborough this spring with a major in Math and Computer Sciences.
He is teaching all math courses to grades 10-12 this year.
Redican said he did not know he wanted to be a teacher when he first started school, but he says, “I think subconsciously I knew I wanted to teach. It is in my family with an aunt, a cousin and great uncle all teaching or a director of education (respectively).”
Redican is from Lindsay, Ont. with is 2.5 hrs. northeast of Toronto. While he knew where Thunder Bay was he admits he had to pull a map out to find out where Rainy River was.
Living here in Rainy River he so far is enjoying the community. He loves to cycle but regrettably left his bike behind in Lindsay.
He also enjoys computers and digital photography and playing chess. He has made contact with chess club organizer at Riverview School Norma-Jean Johnston and hopes to find time to start a chess club at RRHS.
Redican is very busy with his new job, but hopes to use some of his computer skills to upgrade the RRHS web site when time allows.
While his average class size is about 11 students he said, “Small school makes it easier to get into teaching.” Eventually he wouldn’t mind teaching some computer courses in addition to his math slate.
