The Lake of the Woods (Bergland) Women’s Institute met on Sept. 11 for our first meeting of the summer. 8 members answered roll call which was “Describe a new or unique vegetable or flower that you planted this year”.
Over the summer, members were involved with a bake and white elephant sale at the school; presented the Good Citizenship Award to Grade 8 student Chelsea Miller ; planned the planting of flower gardens at the cemetery( to which the Lutheran Ladies beat us ); held Tweedsmuir meetings ; helped plan our annual Bergland Family Fun Day and the Chili cook-off ; helped man the WI information booth at the Emo Fair ; planned, jointly with the Emo Library, a 50s and 60s Rock and Roll Dance complete with an Elvis contest on Sept 15 and attended the Area Convention on Sept.8 and 9 in Dryden.
There will be a Museum Board meeting on Sept. 18 at the Museum at 7pm. Our regular Museum closing event, hosted by Morson Branch, will be a Fall Luncheon held at the Emo Legion on Sept. 30 from 11am to 2pm. There will be a charge of $6.00 for a hearty lunch of homemade soups, sandwiches and desserts. There will also be craft and bake sale tables.
In a report on the Area Convention, the importance of recruiting new members to our Women’s Institute was stressed. In a brainstorming workshop, many ideas were suggested to make branch meetings more interesting. There were several enjoyable presentations 1) “Pillow Talk” - a new way to make cushions 2)” Dressing up Vegetables”- a thoroughly entertaining and educational 1/2 hour on cooking and not cooking vegetables 3)”Travelling Alone” and “Identity Theft”- very informative presentation. Our new Provincial President, Rosemary Moran, is a friendly and personable lady. The 2007 Area will be held in the Rainy River District.
We will again donate to the Pumpkin Festival. We will, as joint hosts along with Forest and Morson Branches, have a Harvest Supper on Oct. 21 to fund raise for our Museum. We will rent tables at the Christmas Craft Sale on Nov. 18 at the Bergland Hall. Our next meeting will be a craft session at the home of Ellen Chojko-Bolec.
