Bourre wins libraries summer reading contest
Rebecca Tolen
RRHS Librarian
The Summer Advisory Program is run by Chapter Indigo in order to generate youth (10-17) written book reviews. They put forth a list of titles they want reviews on. Rainy River Public and Rainy River High School Libraries thought it would be a fun way to keep students reading in the summer so each
purchased several of the titles and then shared them.
Participants only had to read one of the books and submit a review on the title they had chosen. Jesse Bourre turned in a review and won a $25 gift certificate from Chapters Book Stores.
It is very important to keep students reading over the summer because reading is a skill that fades if it is not used. Students tend to regress over the summer if they do not keep up their reading and writing so this is one way the libraries hope to encourage practise over the summer holidays.
The program ran from the begining of June to the end of August.
International Library Week running the week of October 16-21. The Public Library and the High School Library are working together in order to make that week a lot of fun.
Here is a copy of Jesse’s review review.
Peaches
Jodi Lynn Anderson has a unique writing style and it reminds me of Ann Brashares writing. Peaches is funny, creative and has a loving touch. The story of three girls from different walks of life forming a true friendship, sharing heart-breaks and
make-ups is what this book is all about. The book would probably be enjoyed by teenagers. Peaches also made me think about how me and two of my closest friends are different. We are kind of like Birdie, Murphy and Leeda. One girl is caring and is scared
of her own shadow. One is a little more proper and people want to be her and one is always getting into trouble and making the boy’s heads turn. With all of our differences we are still the best of friends and are always there for each other, just like
the girls in the book.
My favourite part of the book was when the girls sneak out to find Birdie her first kiss but not her last. I also enjoyed the part when Leeda makes a list of things that make Murphy annoying. I thought it was funny and might be something I would do if I
was in Leeda’s shoes at the time. The most romantic part of the book was when Enrico comes back to the peach orchard to see Birdie because he loves her. I thought it was cute and a good thing to happen to a girl like Birdie. I didn’t dislike any part of
the book but the beginning of the book was kind of boring but Jodi Lynn Anderson did a good job on setting the place and time. The middle and end made up for the beginning. I could see this book becoming a movie and I will definitely read, The Secrets of
Peaches, the follow-up of this book. I give Peaches two thumbs up and all in all Peaches is juicy, sweet and very enjoyable just like a Georgia Peach.
