In two exciting and nail biting matches the Rainy River High School Owls volleyball teams narrowly lost to the Whitefish Bay Winterhawks last Wednesday.
In the first match the Senior Girls went five games with the hawks but ended up losing the final game 15-9 to lose 3 games to 2.
In the second match the number ranked Owls also went the full distance, but narrowly lost in game five to the Hawks. Game 1 the Owls lost 25-18, and appeared to be on a big downward spiral in the second game falling behind 10-5. Then Brianna Ewald stepped up to serve the ball and rallied her team to a 13-10 lead.
After a one pointer interlude Stacey Olson strongly served five more points to put the Owls out front 19-12. However, despite the strong rallying cry from the service line, the Owls ended up losing 25-23.
But their spirits were not dashed as they came on strong in the third game and won 25-19 with Candace “the powerserver” Handorgan scoring 9 points for the team from the service line.
In game four it was neck and neck all the way through. It was tied 24-24 when the Hawks blew a serve and Kayla Nordin served up the winning point. In a deciding fifth game the Owls fought hard but lost 18-16 and the match 3-2.
In another game, the Senior Girls lost three straight to the Hawks in a make up game played after the junior games. It was a make up game due to cancellations during a snow storm.
