Dennis Ewald
(incumbent
councillor)

Political/Community Experience:
I have been a councillor for two terms.

Why are you running for office?
I like to be proactive rather than complaining to someone else. I would rather try to solve the problem myself.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing Rainy River?
We are losing our tax base here. i.e. Lots of seniors living on taxable properties and not many new people moving in because of the lack of jobs here. Bottom line is we need an industry of some kind.
Another challenge is that a lot of people may not realize that the business community pays a lot of taxes here and by buying locally you are really keeping your community alive. It is tough for the town to try and give anyone tax relief because you are robbing from Peter to pay Paul. Don’t forget that if all the businesses in Rainy River close shop someone is going to have to buck up for what we pay for now.

If elected what do your plan to do about it?
I think you just have to keep working and working hopefully something will fall into place. Let’s face it, we have a beautiful area to live in. We just need something to bring people here.

Tell us about yourself:
I have been employed by CN Rail for 28 years. I am married with three children, two of which are now out on their own the other still attending RRHS. I love fishing and hunting and the quiet lifestyle that Rainy River has to offer.

Do you have a plan or platform you are running on?
No not really. I am just trying to do my part to keep the community a community. You can’t think that it will just keep running on its own because it takes a lot of work.

Other comments about the
election or yourself?
I wish everyone the best of luck and I hope whoever gets elected has a positive experience (which can be tough) with what they want to accomplish.
