Last Monday Rainy River High School’s grade 9 students hosted family and friends to the annual Portfolio Night.
44 students participated in three weeks of writing workshops taught by Laura Armistead and Jenelle Lowes. During that time they learn about, and then compose different forms of literature.
“They do different kinds of poetry, expository, descriptive, short stories and newspaper articles,” said Armistead.
They then put all their work together into a portfolio. On portfolio night they brought their family and friends to the school where everyone was treated to a pizza supper. Afterwards several students read some of their work to everyone in the gymnasium.
Later they broke up into groups and went to classrooms where students read to their parents and parents had a chance to look over the portfolio. Parents were asked to write comments about what they liked.
The students then handed them in for marks.
This experience is part of the grade 9 english program and helps showcase some of the students’ best work.
