CBSA
November 27, 2006 - Thunder Bay, ON - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has arrested a man wanted in Germany on 21 counts of breach of trust.
Hans Juergen Lutz, 55 years old, originally from Schwerin, Germany, was found by a Canada Border Services Officer working at a bicycle shop in Thunder Bay on November 16.
Lutz is wanted in Germany on 21 counts of Breach of Trust for allegedly defrauding people out of close to $4.5 million by selling fake trust accounts. Law enforcement officials in several countries have been looking for Lutz since 2002, when he fled as investigators closed in.
The alert CBSA Officer identified Lutz after observing a vehicle that looked out of place and running the vehicle’s plate numbers through law enforcement databases. The search revealed that the owner of the vehicle was wanted by Interpol.
He is currently being held in detention in Thunder Bay District Jail. He will have a detention review hearing before an officer of the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) tomorrow to determine if he should remain in custody or if he can be released on terms and conditions.
Anyone with information about suspicious cross-border activity is encouraged to call the CBSA Border Watch toll-free line, 1-888-502-9060. All calls are completely confidential.
