Ag funding set to flow from federal government

OTTAWA, June 1, 2001

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lyle Vanclief today announced that final measures have been carried out to transfer $500 million in federal assistance for the farm sector to provincial governments.

With provincial distribution systems already approved, Mr. Vanclief expects the funds to flow quickly to farmers.

“The $500 million in federal funds builds on the $1.1 billion already committed to safety nets this year,” said Mr. Vanclief. “This money reflects our commitment to help Canadian farm families meet current short-term challenges.

“For the longer term, federal, provincial and territorial governments are developing a comprehensive plan to help equip the sector for success in the 21st century. Our goal is to move the sector beyond crisis management and make Canadian agriculture the best in the world for generations to come.”

As they agreed this spring, federal and provincial agriculture ministers will continue to build on the solid reputation Canada has for food safety and environmental sustainability, as well as on assessing the package of safety net programs and other tools farmers need to adjust to market changes.

The $500-million cash injection was initially announced by Mr. Vanclief this spring.
