Ten teams competed for the annual Rainy River Ladies Curling Bonspiel title over the weekend.
In the “A” event it was two local teams, Dawn Drennan and Julie Tiboni’s rinks.
Drennan drew first blood scoring two in the first end.
But in the second it looked like the game might be over early when Tiboni’s team had a chance to score seven but instead chose a different shot and scored five.
Tiboni then added one more in the third to lead 6-2.
Drennan answered with a single in the fourth end.
In the fifth Tiboni’s crew put what appeared to the final nail in Drennan’s coffin with a three ender to lead 9-3. But Drennan would not resign.
In the sixth Tiboni added one more to lead 10-3.
But a determined Drennan battled back picking up two in the seventh and three in the eighth to finish only two back of Tiboni 10-8.
In the “B” event the crowd was treated to the closest game of the finals. Donna Ivall and Shona Nordberg’s rinks were back and forth the entire game.
Ivall scored one in each of the first two ends to lead 2-0. Nordberg then picked up one in the third and two in the fourth to lead 3-2. She then added one more in the fifth.
But Ivall battled back scoring one in each of the sixth and seventh ends to have it tied coming home.
Both teams had lots of rocks in the house and it appeared the game might come down to the very last shot of the game for Nordberg who held the hammer. However, Ivall just missed her last rock leaving Nordberg counting one and she did not have to shoot her last rock. Nordberg won 5-4.
In the “C” event Cathy Seguin’s rink ran away with the game leading 10-1 after four ends over Angie Armstrong.
Armstrong had a chance to get back in the game in the fourth end but as a game of inches goes, she managed to squeeze between two rocks on the edge of the 8’ ring. That miss left Seguin lying six and forced Armstrong’s team to resign.
