The Rainy River High School Owls sports teams had a busy schedule last week, playing host to Pelican Falls on Monday and St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora) Tuesday.
Monday was a great day for the girl Owls who bump set and spiked their way to victory over both Junior and Senior Pelican Falls teams.
Taking to the court first was the juniors. The Owls won the first game 25-19 but Pelican Falls evened the score in the second game narrowly winning 22-25. In the third game the Owls hammered their prey 25-19 and then convincingly beat Pelican Falls in the fourth game 25-16.
The senior girls dropped their first game 13-25, but then bounced back three games straight with solid victories 25-12, 25-13 and 25-19.
There was no basketball that day as Pelican Falls does not have b-ball teams.
Basketball was first to take the court on Tuesday with the seniors doing battle. Unfortunately the Owls were outgunned at the basket 49-30. The juniors played a strong game but could not make their baskets count, losing 74-28.
In senior girl volleyball action the Owls played well but could not stave off the attack from the Saints. RRHS lost 16-25, 21-25 and 17-25.
The junior girl Owls lost in five games but clearly showed that they were on even playing terms with the Saints. Game 1 went to the Saints 24-26. RRHS won the second game 25-17 and the third one 25-12. They lost the fourth game 17-25 to send it to a fifth and deciding game where the Owls lost 10-15.
The next home games are today (Feb.12) against the Atikokan Voyageurs. The junior girls are up first at 10 a.m.; senior girls at 11:30 a.m.; jr. boys at 1 p.m. and sr. boys at 2:30 p.m. All members of the public are welcome to attend.
