It came right down to the last shot and skip Peter Grant made it count to narrowly defeat Tim Nordin in the annual Rainy River Men’s Bonspiel Sunday.
Nordin took an early lead scoring one in the first and stealing one in the second. Grant answered in the third end when Nordin was lying three he drew in with his first rock. Nordin then missed a crucial shot and peeled his own out leaving Grant to draw for two.
In the fourth end Grant added another one, but a determined Nordin picked up two in the fifth when Grant missed a shot allowing Nordin to draw in.
In the sixth Grant tied it up at 4-4. However Nordin fired back with one in the seventh. Grant was one down coming home with the hammer. It came down to that shot. He had to hit and and stick to count two and did.
Grant’s team won 6-5. The rest of his team members were Art Berard, Larry Armstrong and Dave Armstrong. Nordin’s rink had Clint Armstrong, Yogi McCormick and Mike Matthew.
In the B event Roger Erickson’s Baudette rink clipped the wings of Ralph Armstrong’s Rainy River foursome. Erickson, along with Stuart Noble, Chad Beckel and Don Anderson, scored two in the first end. Armstrong answered back with one in the second. However Erickson had a big end in the third picking up three to lead 5-1.
Many fans speculated whether Armstrong would concede early on, but he battled back picking up two in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-3. Erickson then scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Hoping for a deuce in the seventh, Armstrong only managed one. Down 8-4, he decided that was enough. Ralph curled with Brent Anderson, John Anderson and Butch Anderson.
In the C event the game was over early. The Rainy River High School boys team hammered Aarron Armstrong’s rink 8-1 and Armstrong conceded after the 5th end. Bonot scored three in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth and two in the eighth. Armstrong picked up his only point in the third end. Curling with him was Joe Dobransky, Jason Wilson and Leroy Hancharyk.
Bonot and teammates Matt Neilson, Jason Seguin and Kevin Nordberg left Monday for the NORWOSSA playdowns in Sioux Lookout. They play today and Wednesday.
