The Lake of the Woods Bantam B hockey team won District Playoffs two weekends ago and are set to head for Regional Championships this weekend in Duluth, Minnesota.
The team, which is made up of kids from Rainy River and Baudette, moved up to Bantam after a phenomenal Pee Wee B year last year. Coach Glen Armstrong said that other than a couple of players the team remained relatively intact.
The team faced off against some tough competition at Districts from some much larger centers. In their first game LoW came out on top with 4-1 victory. That set the stage for the rest of the tournament in which LoW was virtually unstoppable.
In their second game Jason Yeo and Kyle Kuzyk, both of Rainy River, peppered the Crookston goalie with shots, each scoring four times. That was capped off by a goal by Brandon Foldoe of Baudette.
Sunday morning they faced East Grand Forks who were seeded to the finals with a bye. However that was not a factor in the minds of LoW. Again they attacked with a flurry of shots and beat EGF’s net minder six times to win 6-2. Taylor Baade of Baudette lead the team with a hat-trick and Brent Noble of Baudette, Jason Yeo and Kyle Kuzyk each scored one.
Coach Armstrong said that while the team’s offense was strong so was its defense noting, “Dylan Davis put in a stellar performance goal tending for us.” Armstrong said the entire team played well and that all team members had a drink from the District Cup.
