Yet another curling champion from Stratton!
Angela Lee, 20, of Stratton, won the Provincial Ladies curling title on Feb. 22-24th. This was her second year winning the title, but this year she skipped the team.
Last year she played third but was promoted by the coaches this year to skip. The rest of the team, Kelli Smith-Third (of Thunder Bay), Elizabeth Eby-Second (of Thunder Bay) and lead Alyssa Gannon (of Nipigon), all curled together last year.
At the Richmond Hill Curling Club (in Toronto) they faced five other colleges, Mohawk, Georgian, Algonquin and Sir Sanford Flemming.
They faced Algonquin first and squeaked a tough victory out of them. “She (Algonquin skip) had a chance to win, but we ended up stealing coming home,” explained Lee in an interview Sunday.
In the second game Lee and Co. played Georgian College and won handily.
In the third game Lee said it all came down to a few misses by her team and they lost to Sir Sanford Fleming.
They won their fourth game against Mohawk.
In the finals for the provincial title they played Georgian College again. Lee said it was very close with the game going back and forth from end to end. In fact it was so close that Lee had to make her very last shot to win. “We were down two coming home with the hammer. We were lying two and I had to draw in for the win.” She made that shot and won the provincial title for the second year in a row.
In 1999 Lee also curled on the RRHS Girls Curling team that went to the All Ontario’s (OFSSA’s) and did what no other team had ever done; they brought home the gold medal. “It feels just as good to win the college title as it did to win OFFSSA’s,” said Lee.
The Confederation College team has won the provincials 4 out of the last five years and Lee is hoping they will be able to do that again next year. That will be her last year of school there and she is planning to curl for the school again.
In the mean time she has also secured a spot at the Thunder Bay area districts for Mixed Curling. Curling with Mike Assad (who went to the Brier with Al Hackner last year), Leesa Broder and Justin McCarvill, the team won zones this past weekend. This Wednesday they travel to Marathon for districts. If they win there they will go to provincials.
She also has her sights set on the Scott Tournament of Hearts, noting that her ladies league team almost made it to provincials this year, losing out at districts. Her sister, Andrea Lee also curls on that team and also has a Con. College title under her belt.
The Con. College men’s team also brought home gold the same weekend Lee did. The skip of that team is the skip of her mixed team, Mike Assad. Lee said she has picked up some good tricks from Assad and is looking forward to the Districts this week.
