I do not want to see the playschool close
Dear Editor:
I am a parent of a four year old, as well as a seven month old. My oldest child has just completed the playschool program, which is held at the Toy Library, October though May. She enjoyed it immensely, and I feel that it has prepared her for junior kindergarten.
I must admit that I do not attend the meetings of Rainy River Playschool Inc., but I was recently informed that they may cancel the playschool program this fall. Not for lack of attendance, but because some members feel that the playschool program is interfering, of “taking away business” from the daycare centre.
Am I the only one who feels that this is a poor excuse for discontinuing a well-attended program that prepares our preschoolers for elementary school?
Don’t get me wrong, I totally support the efforts of the local daycare. It provides jobs and a place for parents to bring their children for quality care. But, I don’t feel that children would necessarily attend the daycare just because there is no playschool program being offered.
Would that then lead to the closure of the toy library?
The playschool program is not just a place to leave your kid for a couple of hours. Many parents stay to help out and watch their child learn and play. I would be truly saddened if the program was not available to my baby when the time comes.
Why discontinue a program that is working for so many children and their parents?
–Sincerely,
Georgia Kreger
