It was a heartbreaker but it was a good experience for Angie Lee of Stratton who lost in the finals at the Ontario Mixed Curling Championships last Saturday.
Lee who was a member of the 1999 All Ontario RRHS Championship team, curled with Mike Assad, Leesa Broder and Justin McCarvill all of Thunder Bay. The team did exceptionally well winning their first four round-robin games. Lee said Sunday that the first two games were fairly straight forward for the Thunder Bay team. “We quit after 7 ends,” said Lee confidently.
In the third game they were down by 3 points at the 5th end break. They fought back hard stealing four in the next four ends and won.
In their fifth and final round-robin game they faced the MacInnes rink of Timmins. That team won the championship last year and their experience showed. They beat them but Assad, Lee and company were still one of the top two teams. “Had we beat them they would have had to beat us twice in the championships,” said Lee.
However the Thunder Bay foursome was not to see victory in the finals. After six ends they quit, sending MacInnes to the nationals next year in Vancouver.
While Lee was disappointed she noted that their team’s average age was 22 and that they plan to stick together next year. Building up experience as a team, she feels they could win the provincials, much like the experienced MacInnes rink.
