Track and field season has started, despite winter’s resistance to end.
As part of an international sports co-op with Lake of the Woods Schools, students from Rainy River Schools are able to participate in track and field, a sport that is only competed in at the elementary level in Rainy.
There have been two early season indoor meets so far. Rainy River kids have done fairly well, especially Shantelle Davidson who set a school record of 12:29 in the 3200 metre run and earned a bronze medal in it on March 28th in Bemidji. She then shaved 11 minutes off that time on April 4th in another meet in Bemidji when she finished the 3200 m in 12:18.25 and earned a gold medal.
In the 4X800 m relay Davidson was part of a 7th place finish (11:09.23) on Mar. 28th. They also finished 5th on April 4th with a time of 11:11.18.
Shauna McInerney also had a good couple of meets. In the 4X200 relay she finished 3rd with a time of 1:56.05 and 4th with a time of 1:57.22 at each of the respective meets. She also finished 4th at both meets in the long jump with jumps of 15-11.5 and 15-7. In the 200m dash she finished 1st at both meets with 26.92 and 27.16 respectively.
Chelsea Ewald was also part of the 4X200 relay team that finished 3rd and 4th at the meets. She also had 15th and 26th place finishes in the 55m dash with times of 8.06 and 8.09.
Athena Pirkl had a 7th place finish in the triple jump at the second meet with a jump of 30-07.75 and a 9th place finish at the same meet in the long jump (14-10.5).
Matt Neilson had a 16th place finish in the 4X800 relay with a time of 9:59.68 and a 32nd place finish in the 1600 m with a time of 5:47.14.
