The Rainy River District will be all the world’s stage May 7-9, 2002 when the World Health Organization will hold its 5th National Conference on Safe Communities here.
While the main conference is being hosted by Fort Frances, organizers are anxious to showcase the entire Rainy River District. On Wednesday, May 8th, at least 100 delegates from all over the world will be coming to Rainy River for a full day of sessions.
The Town of Rainy River and the Rainy River and District Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to host the visitors. Arriving about 8:30 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, local dignitaries will welcome them.
From there they will split into two groups and attend safety seminars at either the legion or the Rainy River Activity Depot (in the old CNR station).
At lunch time they will all gather at the legion. A meal, which is open to the public will be served. Chamber President, Patti Palson said, “This is an incredible chance for residents to get to meet and interact with people of different nationalities, as there will be 30 different countries represented.”
Lt. Ed Moses, a retired police officer from the United States and an expert in his area of discussion, will speak on road safety during lunch.
After that the groups will split up again and complete their day of sessions.
Also taking place that day will be tours of the area which will include visits to the area buffalo farms and other attractions.
“Come out, represent your community and help us host a once in a lifetime event,” encouraged Palson.
