Former RR boys wins provincial gold!
Editor’s Note: Eric Johnston is the son of Rebecca Johnston and Stefan Scherer, formerly of Rainy River, and now living in Nepean, Ontario. His grand parents are Norma-Jean and Irwin Johnston of Rainy River.
On April 21, 2002, former Rainy Riverite, Eric Johnston won provincial gold at the provincial gymnastics championships.
Eric admitedly was nervous but was focused as he competed in the ARGO B category - 12 year old boys. According to his mother, Rebecca, “He was consistently outstanding and held his focus and energy together. “ His scores were:
Floor - 9.450 to win silver
Pommel horse - 9.1 to win silver
Rings - 9.450 to win silver
Parallel bars - 9.1 to win bronze
High bar - 9.45 to place 4th
Vault - 8.5 to place 11th
With a total of 55.050 out of 60 he won the over all competition and the Individual Gold Medal.
He also led his team, the Eastern region, to also win the Team Gold Medal.
He is the individual and a member of the champion team of Ontario! He kept losing the gold medals in individual events by tenths and hundredths of points which was really frustrating but he was consistently superior across all events. He was never beaten by the same person as they had worked to perfect one event out of the six.
He also competed his "Full" vault which was a first for him and excellent experience, even though he didn't place well (Eric had a 8.5 and the gold medallist with the regular vault won with a 8.7).
