Adah Jane (Jean) Engebretsen, 87

Adah Jane (Jean) Engebretsen, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 9, 2007 at Riverside Health Care Facilities, Long Term Care in Rainy River, Ontario.

Adah (Jean) was born August 24, 1920 in Rainy River, Ontario, the only child of James and Adah Fiddes. Jean received her education in Rainy River. She had a strong work ethic, working at various occupations during her lifetime, including retiring from the Rainy River Post Office after 34 years. On April 4, 1970 she was united in marriage to Frederick at the United Church in Rainy River. Andrew Engebretsen and moved from Rainy River to the farm in Blue Township. Jean and Fred enjoyed 34 years of marriage until his passing on June 22, 2004.

Due to failing health Jean moved into the Long Term Care Unit in Rainy River in November 2006. Jean was a very shy and private person. She enjoyed music and spent many hours playing the piano. She also played the organ for services at St. James Anglican Church in Rainy River for a number of years. She was an avid reader and very knowledgeable on numerous subjects. Other hobbies included knitting, crocheting and tatting.

Jean enjoyed the outdoors. She spent many hours working in her vegetable garden, weeding her perennial flowers, growing grapes and pruning her special varieties of lilacs. She was very fond of animals and received great pleasure in watching the wild birds and chipmunks eating from her feeders. Over the years Jean adopted many stray animals and she enjoyed the companionship of her cats.

Jean was predeceased by her parents James and Adah Fiddes and her husband Frederick A. Engebretsen.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Knox United Church in Rainy River, Ontario. Reverend Barbara Miller will officiate with interment in the Blue Cemetery in the Township of Dawson, ON.

The pallbearers will be William Lundgren, Carl Peters, Charlie Johnson, John Penner, Ken Trenchard and Guy Newman.
