The Lake of the Woods Women’s Institute held an achievement day Sunday in Bergland.
The day was held to sew up a few loose ends to a great learning season for seven young girls.
As part of the W.I.’s mandate, they try to teach youth the skills necessary to live. Esmeralda Larson spearheaded a learning to sew program and in a short time all the members of the LoW W.I. were actively running the program.
Ruth Brett, a LoW W.I. member, said that the first two Saturdays last fall were used to familiarize the seven girls with the sewing machines. The sessions were held at McCrosson-Tovell School and once everyone was up to speed on the machines, projects were chosen to complete.
“We started with something simple, like a bag,” explained Ruth, “and then worked towards a complicated project.” After the bag, head-bands were made and eventually they worked up to a cuddle-quilt.
“They really seemed to like the quilting,” said Ruth. At Sunday’s achievement day, they started discussing the next big project that they will look at for the next learning season.
With the program being only in its first year, they expect it to be even more popular next year. “We had some boys that were interested, but they came on board too late. Hopefully next year,” said Ruth.
All the girls received terra-cotta flower pots with a pin cushion in them as a recognition of their achievements on the year.
