A new resource base was unveiled at Rainy River and Emo Hospitals Friday afternoon.
A $700 resource library on Palliative Care was placed in each of the two hospitals and hopes are that one can be placed in Fort Frances later this year.
Palliative Care is provided by volunteers throughout the Rainy River District. They provide support at home, in hospital or extended care facilities to individuals and families living with a chronic or life threatening illness. While the volunteers are trained to listen, help individuals and families maintain meaning and satisfaction in daily life, provide relief for caregivers, provide and share in activities like music, reading, walks, etc., some times questions need answers.
Wilma Sletmoen, the Regional Coordinator for Kenora-Rainy River Palliative Care said that they are trying to address those questions by providing a book and video resource library at each of the area hospitals. Palliative Care volunteers or the public can sign the books out.
All the books and videos were purchased with donated monies and deal with subjects like suicide and bereavement as well as many other subjects as they pertain to Palliative Care.
On Friday, RR nurses gathered in the quiet room of the Rainy River Hospital Emergency Room for the unveiling of the library by Sletmoen and Janet Loney who is the Chair of the RR Palliative Care Program. Later that afternoon they did the same thing in Emo.
