Rainy River’s Shauna McInerney broke records in track and field competitions last week both at the conference and state levels.
At the Northwoods Conference meet last Thursday Lake of the Woods School in Baudette saw both its boys and girls teams win with 158 and 211 points respectively. While it was a team effort, McInerney did quite good breaking the conference record in the 200 m dash that was set in 1988. She ran a time of 26.382 seconds. The old record was 26.45 sec. She also broke the conf. record for the 400 m dash set in 1992. She ran a time of 61.371sec. The old record was 61.5 sec.
Later in the week, McInerney was joined in record breaking by three other LoW students in record breaking. McInerney came in first at the State True Team meet in the long jump event and set a LoW School record with a jump of 15’ 3.75”. She also finished 2nd in both the 200m and 400 m dash with times of 26.72 and 60.56 seconds. Annie Gubbels also set a school record in the shot put with a distance of 31’ 9.75”. Matt Nielson and Ben Hopkins each set LoW school records for their runs in the 3200m and 100m events.
Overall the LoW Bears Boys and Girls finished 9th and 7th out of 9 teams at the State True Team meet. Coach Mark Washburn said that the competition was tough and that he and coach Brian Novak were pleased with teams’ performances.
This Thursday the teams travel to Warren, MN for Sub-sections. From there only the top five in each event and the top two relays advance to the Section meet on June 1st. From there the top two individual and the top one relay team advance to the State finals on June 7 & 8.
