The Northwestern Health Unit is again supporting the Summer Active program to promote increased physical activity in the Rainy River area.
Heidi Ivall of the NWHU said the theme this year is “Get Active”. While a national program they are busy organizing and running six weeks of getting active and staying active programs to improve people’s health.
In addition to planned events Ivall said people can take part in an on line contest at www.summeractive.canoe.ca. They register their physical activities on line and are entered into the contest. Last year Jody Boisvert of Rainy River won a prize on line.
A planned activity that has grown in proportion each of the past two years from 46 to 100+ participants will return May 30th. A community poker-walk and beach volleyball tournament will be held that evening in Hannam Park. Poker-walkers are not required to follow a route or just walk. They can scooter, roller blade, cycle, walk or run for a thirty minute duration. They then receive a poker hand and if they have the best hand they will win a healthy lifestyle oriented prize.
The volleyball will require teams of four (2 adults and 2 youth) to preregister by calling RR Rec. Director Monique Gall at 852-4446 or at the park next Thursday. All are welcome for either activities which are free of charge.
Ivall said that in the Barwick area Rec. Director Heather Olster will be organizing an Activiathon day.
