The name McInerney is definitely going down in the local history books.
Over the weekend Shauna McInerney did what coaches believe has only been done once before. As an individual competitor, McInerney is going to the Minnesota State finals for both the 200m and 400m dashes. She finished first in both events at the Section 8A meet with times of 26.51 and 59.84 seconds. She has had a busy year setting records at Lake of the Woods High School in track and field as part of an international sports cooperative that allows students from Rainy River High School to compete in sports in Baudette.
Ben Hopkins of LoW High will also be travelling to State this weekend in Minneapolis to compete in the 100m and 200m dashes. He won the 100m with at time of 11.48 and came in 2nd in the 200m with a time of 23.54 seconds.
Leondard Mathias finished 3rd with a time of 11.6 seconds in the 100m dash.
Hopkins is also part of the LoW 4X200 relay team. Other members are Cooper Mickelson, Leondard Mathias and Weston Dornhecker. They ran a time of 1:33.71 to win that event. Only the top relay teams advance to state. In individual sports the top two go on.
The girls 4X200 team finished 3rd only 3 seconds behind first place.
Chelsea Ewald of Rainy River had a 6th place finish in the girls 100m dash with a time of 13.61 seconds. The winner of Dilworth, MN. had a time of 12.79 seconds.
