The Rainy River Legion fastball team continues its dominance of the league winning both their games last week.
On Tuesday the team travelled to Big Grassy where RR pitcher Murray Armstrong pitched his first no-hitter ever and almost earned a perfect game. Only an error in the 7th spoiled that statistic. Guy Arpin hit a home run in the top of the 7th and brought a base runner home. Rainy won 2-0.
On Thursday Rainy River hosted Hyatt’s Construction. Hyatt’s started things off with an early home run which scored two in the top of the first. But that just prompted Rainy to slug back even harder. Rick Tymkin lead off with a double and stole third. Guy Arpin hit a single and scored Tymkin. Don Gall then laid down a sacrifice bunt advance Arpin to second. Arpin then stole third while Murray Armstrong was at bat. Armstrong was walked and with runners on the corners Jim Chorney hit one hard to left. It cleared the fence with room to spare and he earned some R.B.I.s and a home run for the stat sheets.
Brent “Wheels” Anderson burned up the bases hitting a double and stealing third and then home on a passed ball. Walter Wagner was then walked but was stranded on base when the next two players went out. After one RR lead 5-2.
It was three up three down for the Hyatts the next inning. Guy Arpin hit a homer in the bottom of the inning to bring in Tymkin. RR now lead 7-2.
Strong pitching by Armstrong continued in the top of the third. He struck out three and stranded one. In the bottom of the inning RR continued to build their lead scoring three runs. They now lead 10-2.
In the top of the fourth Hyatts had a small rally scoring one and stranding one. Their defense also held RR to one run, scored by Darren Davidson. It was now 11-3.
In the top of the fifth Guy Arpin went in to pitch for Armstrong and he struggled on the mound. The Hyatts rallied and put four runs on the board and two more runners on base before Armstrong was put back in to retire three in a row. Facing only a four run lead RR fought back and put two more runs on the board.
In the top of the sixth the Hyatts were held scoreless and in the bottom of the inning RR scored two more to seal their victory at 15-7. The Hyatts did not score in the top of the seventh.
RR is now 7-1. They have a bye tonight and Thursday is a make up date.
