Area First Nations to study wind power potential here

News Release
Ont. Govt.

Harnessing the wind as a source of renewable energy may provide significant economic benefits for a Far North First Nation.
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) will invest $45,762 in a study by the Ojibways of Onigaming to investigate the feasibility of setting up a wind generation facility. The study will involve installing equipment that will collect and assess wind data as well as the environmental impact of a wind generation facility.
“As this community considers sources of renewable energy it is laying the foundation for sustainable economic development in the future,” said Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines, who also chairs the NOHFC.
Wind energy is the fastest growing electricity source in the world.
Supporting new renewable energy projects will help Ontario reach its goal of generating 10 per cent of its electricity capacity through renewable generation by 2010.
