Rainy River High School did itself and the community proud on Thursday when it hosted and competed in the NORWOSSAA Single “A” soccer playoffs.
Both local teams competed and ended up winning silver medals, both losing in the finals to St. Thomas Aquinas of Kenora.
In the first game RRHS boys beat Red Lake 1-0 with Dakota Andy scoring and goal tender Mark Clifford getting the shut out.
That advanced them to the finals later that day where they lost to T.A. 4-0.
The RRHS girls defeated Queen Elizabeth (Sioux Lookout) 2-0. Felicia Schmutz and Alyshia Langlais each scored a goal for RR. Alyshia plays defense and this was her first opportunity to score as well as her last as she is an outgoing senior scoring off a penalty kick. Goal tender Molly Bartlett earned the shut out.
That advanced them to the finals later that day where they lost a nail-biter to St. Thomas Aquinas 1-0
Both teams received the silver medals in the NORWOSSAA Play offs.
This was the first time Rainy River High has hosted the NORWOSSAA playoffs and by all accounts they did a first class job.
