This past Sunday, 39 intrepid golfers descended on the picturesque Spruce Creek Golf Course for the 2008 edition of the Rainy River Open Golf Tournament. Despite threatening skies, golfers teed-off with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
As the tournament progressed, it became evident that the course presented a challenge both to skilled golfers as well as to those of us who are less accomplished. The common denominator was that everyone had fun. Fortunately, the rains held off until nearly all golfers had completed their rounds.
When the dust settled, Glenn Crackel had retained his title as champion for a second year, with a score of 84, followed by Brendan Nordberg with a score of 87. Third place in the championship flight went to Shane Aikenhead with a score of 89.
The ladies champion for 2008 is Angie Armstrong with a score of 104. Second place went to Jan Rossborough with a score of 117, and third place was won by Lynn Crackel with a score of 123.
In the non-championship men’s flights, the winner of the first flight was Trent Armstrong (86), followed by Tim Nordin (90), and James Jarvis (92).
The winner of the second flight was Allen Pratt (96), followed by Don Ricci (97) in second place. Roman Stoyko, Vaughn Murray and Jim Crackel finished in third with scores of 99.

The men’s third event was won by Bill Langner (102), with A. J. Pirkl in second with 109, and Cody Jarvis in third place with 113.
The longest putt of the day was won by Danny Armstrong. Closest to the pin was won by Allen Pratt. The longest drive of the day for men was won by Vaughn Murray, and for women by Lynn Crackel.
Everyone is encouraged to mark Sunday, August 2, 2009, on their calendar for next year’s Rainy River Open. We hope it will be bigger and better than ever.
