Red Hat pirates invaded Oak Grove Camp
By Susan Douglas
Red Hat Society
Ahoy there Mateys! The Les Rouge Rogues of Rainy River became red hat brigands July 29th at Oak Grove Camp. Many bold and hearty bandits united in merriment wearing, striped socks, eye patches, black vests and boots, etc. As the pirates lumbered into Blackbeard’s Cave, they were each tattooed with lovely butterflies. Muscular Pirate Pete, (Elsie Gerula) carrying a treasure chest full of booty, jewels and golden coins, was swiftly surrounded by eager fortune hunters. Pete had to use his unloaded weapon to keep the culprits at bay. Pirate twins, “Lost” and “Found”, (Janet Schaaf and Jean Lauzon) drew their Blunder -bust pistols and Cutlass Swords in a dual, however, they were swiftly interrupted by Piratess Black Tooth, (Susan Douglas) who settled the dispute by assuring the culprit’s the booty would be divided fairly.
As the Pirate Grog was poured, Pirate Purple Shirt, ( Ruth Holt) growled, “Errol Flynn would never drink this,” to which her Purple Parrot squawked in agreement.
The cunning corsairs were quickly divided into teams, the Kaptain’s Hookers, (fish), the Putrid Pirates, and the Pirate Girlies; each creating their own flag with paints and available items.
The Swash-bucklers took part in a fishing game, pirate puzzle, river raft racing, walking the plank, and the cannon ball toss. During the river rafting the poor, soaked ,and tired buccaneers were heard whimpering, “let’s call it a tie, no let’s call it quits, oh-let’s just call it a day!” They capered through the park back to the Cave for a wonderful BBQ lunch complete with smores and blue Jell-o fishes. Nautical and gem prizes were divided among all the teams. Pirate Rotten Teeth, (Dawn Jarvis) shared her plunder of diamond rings with all the Caribbean outlaws as well. Friend of the fugitives, Len Ricci, created the two door prizes of bird memo holders won by Linda Budreau and Elsie Gerula. Thanks Len from the Pirates! Happy Birthday was played on kazoos and sung off key to Susan and Linda. Shiver me timbers! AARGH, it was a wonderful day!
