The season started about a month ago, but the local Tourist Information Centre held its grand opening for the summer last Friday and Saturday.
Friday afternoon a group of guests as well as the Honourable Howard Hampton, MPP for Kenora-Rainy River, were on hand for the ceremonies.
They began with Centre Manager Margaret Dubé announcing that the Rainy River Centre had recently received a very special honour. They received the Discovery Award presented by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
"What a way to kick off our open house," said a very elated Dubé.
Dubé has been with the centre for 9 years and both of her staff, Patti Tetu and Heather MacDonald have been there for 3 years each. She noted that there are 17 other locations for the centres and that they have been placed strategically across the province to greet visitors. More than 3 million pass through the centres each year of which Howard Hampton said about 10,000 pass through Rainy River's centre.
Hampton commended the staff of the centre for a job well done and the receipt of their award.
"Anyone can find a lot of valuable information here," said Hampton.
He went on to say that he feels that this area has yet to reach its full tourism potential and that will happen through the excellent marketing skills of people like Margaret, Patti and Heather. Town Councillor Glen Armstrong congratulated the centre on its opening and echoed Hampton's comments on the potential for even more tourism here.
After speeches a special cake was cut and served. On Saturday a free barbecue was held at the centre.
