Since the report in the Record two weeks ago that the local CIBC Run for the Cure would not be happening in Rainy River and other Northwestern Ontario (NWO) communities this year, things have changed for the positive in at least two communities; Rainy River and Kenora.
Erin McBride a spokesperson for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation told the Record Thursday, “We have been working through CIBC to connect with the northern Ontario communities which supported the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in previous years by hosting events at the same time as the national Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. So far, we’ve found ways for Rainy River and Kenora to hold events this year, on the same date as the 2008 national Run for the Cure.
They are still hoping to connect with the other NWO communities that have had runs in the past.
“We’re very happy that we have found a solution that meets the needs of Rainy River and Kenora residents so they can continue their grass roots support this year,” said McBride.
In Rainy River, people who wish to take part will register on-line as Virtual Participants at www.cbcf.org A team of local CIBC employees will be then hosting a run/walk at the local bank on the same day as the national event, Oct. 5, 2008 at 10 a.m. After the walk there will be refreshments provided at the bank, which is located on Main St. in Rainy River.
“We are thrilled that Rainy River residents are continuing to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, and we’re very pleased that this approach works for the people involved,” exclaimed McBride.
A different approach will be taken in Kenora, where local CIBC personnel will host a Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure event on October 5th, 2008. “We’re using a customized approach for Kenora this year, and hope that in future years they can become an official Developing Run Site, which is an existing model being used in other communities of similar size,” explained McBride.
“So, both Rainy River and Kenora will be supporting the Run this year. We think this is a great outcome for Rainy River, Kenora, CIBC and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation,” concluded McBride.
