With an explosion of flavour, Monica Nelson has opened Gramma Dynamite’s Eatery in the east end of Rainy River.
Nelson is no stranger to this type of business having operated her own restaurant under the same name in western Canada and two similar operations in Rainy River previously.
In 1998 and 1999 she ran the canteen at the Rainy River Marina. Then in 2000 she operated Moose Mulligans, but due to a personal crisis had to leave that business. Now she is back on her feet and offering a full menu of burgers, subs, pizza and a full line of ice cream treats.
Gramma Dynamites is operating out of Logan Ewald’s Custom Launderette and Car Wash building on the south side of Highway 11. While previous Rainy River ventures have been seasonal, this time she plans to be full time, year round. Her current quarters are temporary, at least until an addition is put on the building she is operating from.
In the mean time there is a couple of booths to eat in inside the laundromat and some outside tables with umbrellas in front of the building.
Nelson graduated top of her class from Sir Sandford Flemming College from the Management and Food and Beverage Administration program in 1990. She even won outstanding student of the year and says that she will apply background towards making her venture a dynamite success!
While she is offering mostly fast foods, she plans to expand her menu into areas like lasagna and fried chicken down the road. For now she is being kept busy serving her specially seasoned burgers, many variations of both soft and hard ice cream treats and subs and pizzas.
The new venture has created four jobs besides her own. Monica said that she has learned from previous experience that it is important to take time for herself and has hired people to allow her to do that.
Since opening about a month ago she said she has been very busy, noting, “There has been a lot of Manitoba traffic, as well as many locals using it as a meeting place over ice cream.”
Dynamite’s is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Phone orders for pizzas are appreciated at 852-1788.
