Tragedy strikes on Lake of the Woods

The Ontario Provincial Police dive team arrived in Kenora Sunday to assist with two separate incidents of persons going through the ice on Lake of the Woods during the weekend.
On Friday, March 20, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. police were alerted to a dump truck that had gone through the ice on Lake of the Woods approximately 2 miles from Monument Lodge. The truck had been hauling cement from North West Angle Inlet USA to Monument Lodge during the evening. On the trip the driver of the dump truck missed the turn to Monument Lodge and came across a pressure crack in the ice where the truck went through.
OPP officers with the assistance of Lake of the Woods Search and Rescue attended the location and with the use of underwater camera located the truck which had been flipped onto its roof in approximately 20 - 30 feet of water. The ice at this location was estimated to be 20" thick.
On Sunday, March 22, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. OPP divers retrieved the deceased from inside the cab of the dump truck. He was identified as 68 year old Allen Elleson of North West Angle Inlet, Minnesota, USA.
On Saturday, March 21, 2009 OPP were advised of a snow machine that had gone through the ice on Lake of the Woods. Two snow machines came from the trail in Cyclone Island onto Lake of the Woods where is was apparent the ice was poor. The first machine was able to make it to good ice but the second machine went into the water.
Missing are 47 year old Wayne Windahl and 16 year old Jeremy Windahl of Warroad, Minnesota USA. Members of Kenora OPP Marine Unit, OPP dive team and members of Lake of the Woods Search and Rescue attend the scene yesterday to continue with the search.
