Red Hatters review several books at their meetings

By Susan Douglas

Lady Dolly of La Tea Da, (Dawn Jarvis), emailed the red hatter’s Queen, who was vacationing in Feb. at the time that the ‘Book Worms’ met.
The local CN Hotel dining room was the rendezvous selection to pour over the books that had been read the last month by the ladies.
Lady Dolly was excited to let the Queen know about the fabulous luncheon that nine of the ladies attended, catered by Patti Diebel, of the Hotel. It was simply ‘marvellous’!
The Queen was pleased to announce that Les Rouge Rogues will be dining there in March for their Julia Caesar play, and she can’t wait to see what all the raves are about.
The Book Worms met again in March at the Rainy River Library, toting a donation of books along with their bag lunches, and braving a stormy day.
A few of the books reviewed were: The Last Lecture by Randy Parish, The Lace Reader by Brunnonia Bary, Sundays at Tiffanys by James Patterson, The Pilot’s Wife by Anita Shreve, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, Mrs. Delaware, The Lucky One by Nicolas Sparks, Life Mask by Emma and Mr. Pip by Lloyd Jones. Mr Pip was read by a couple ladies and Governess of Guitar, Charlene Gustafson, expanded on the reading expressing: “The story of Mr. Pip enters you. He’s brave, gentle, and heart warming and he came through for me.” There is turmoil and change on an island, by two groups. A 13 yr. old village girl, Matilda, lives a simple life on the island that seems isolated from the outside world where all the men have vanished to fight. She gets involved with Mr. Watts, the only white man to not have deserted the island, and who has decided to teach the children from the only book he has, Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens; the story of Pip and Estelle. Eventually one group of soldiers come looking around the island, and particularly for Mr. Pip, whose name they have found written in the sand, (by the obsessed Matilda). The fallout is brutal and barbaric. This unforgettable novel, Mr Watts and Matilda, will make a mark on your heart.
Before the ladies lunched, Lady Dolly of La Tea Da, read the delightful book to the red hatters called, “Fancy Nancy” by Jane O’Connor, a great illustrated book for little girls, like us! Our next book club gathering will be at Jessie Bodnarchuk’s on Tues. Apr. 7th at 11:30 a.m., bring your bag lunch!
