With winter finally releasing its icy grip on the District, the Courtyard Rehabilitation Project is driving towards home in its fundraising goal of $15,000. Thursday morning, April 9, a pancake and sausage breakfast was being served up to hungry hoards in the multi-purpose room at the RRHS. Celebrity Chef, and parent, Dr. Albert Beller along with able assistance from Jack McMaster, Director of Education for the Board, and Stratton parent Telford Advent, was busy flipping, frying and serving.
Winner of the draw for an the Easter lily was Carla Westover, while Emily’s ‘Death by Blueberry’ cheese cake winner was Valerie Lauzon. Winners of ‘Polka Dot’ plants to welcome in spring were Dawn Jarvis, Carla Westover, Georgina Jarvis, Cathy Seguin, and Valerie Lauzon.
Fundraising has passed the $7000 mark with a placemat advertising campaign raising $4500 of the total. The Rainy River Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has also been very generous, donating $1,500 towards the project, said Advent.
“We are really pleased with the support we have received from the business community on the ad mat project. Our thanks to them all,” stated chair of the project, Peggy Advent.
“Our next project is a Community consignment/donation auction sale to be held on the arena surface, Sun, May 3, with the proceeds going to the Project and the students will be running the canteen at the Arena that day adding to the effort,” added Advent, reminding those wishing to list consignment or donation items to call her at 483-5403 by April 17 to make sure their ‘Trash & Treasures’ make the auction posters.
Individuals or groups donating $100 or more towards the project will be recognized on a plaque. Charitable Donation Tax receipts are also available, noted Advent
Phase I construction on the project is scheduled to begin this spring as soon as the frost is out. Volunteers to help with the construction work are required and students working on the project will be credited with community service hours towards their graduation requirements.
