Figure skating numbers up this season

The Rainy River Figure Skating Club is skating figure eights around last season with a rise in registrations to 55.
The club has hired a new instructor, Mrs. Cory Voth, of Emo. She has been busy teaching the 33 beginners and the other 22 CanSkaters and jr. and senior skaters at the Rainy River arena every Thursday and Sunday afternoons.
Last week the club held its annual skate-a-thon to raise monies to help defer the expenses of running the club all winter. They raised about $3,000 of which about one third was raised by four members alone.
They were honoured last Thursday with plaques and congratulations. The top money raiser was Shanah Carpenter (a CanSkater) $500. Coming in second was Courtney Hansen (a junior skater) $215. Tied for third was Shauna Moen (a CanSkater) and Kendra Moen (a beginner) $160 each.
While Voth is not certified to instruct, she is very close and hopes to complete her certification in the near future. Assisting her are two senior skaters Keshia Brigham and Hillary Hansen.
The club is still accepting registrants, however there is a $20 late registration fee. Costs for participants are $90-beginner, $150-CanSkate and $175-jr./sr.
They hold practises from 4:30-6:45 p.m. Thursday and Sunday. In addition to learning skills the club members will all participate in the annual ice show usually held in early March.
