Real life pioneer adventurers to visit area next week
How would you like to walk along side your "pioneer" ancestors as they endured another day of rain, mosquitoes and discouragement as they planted their first crop in this new land.
Cutting into the prairie sod with a dull plow pulled by two inexperienced Pergeron horses and directed by two even less "experienced" brand new "farmer pioneers", the work was difficult, dangerous and back breaking.
And then to have water swirling in behind the open furrow, filling every bit of effort as it rained and rained ............. and rained.
The ladies were just as challenged. Working in an "open" kitchen, covered by a roof but exposed on all sides provided little relief from the relentless attacks by the mosquitoes and then the black flies or the chill of the damp morning air after spending another night in a wet tent that served only as a filter for the steady rainfall. And the endless "muck" as the gals gathered firewood, picked berries & herbs, tended the animals and cooked and washed.
Cooking was an all day effort from a tiny stove and keeping those mucky clothes washed on a board in a tub and dried as the sun would break through.
Add little restful sleep, long days of extremely hard work, illness, loneliness, fires, runaways, coldest winter in 100 years .........building their cabins, digging for fresh water, planting, replanting, haying, cooperating with the other couple .........
Sounds more like a "ordeal" than an adventure!
Yet these pioneers, Tim & Deanna Treadway, like your ancestors, persevered and survived. Not only did they overcome these adversities, but they found a peace and a serenity as their "pace" slowed down to that of their horse drawn wagon or sleigh, they had time together and reconfirmed the importance of communication between mates and to serve one another.
If you would like to hear more, The Treadways will be coming to this area on Friday evening, November 22, 6:00pm at the Emo Christian Reform Church. Hors d'oeuvres will be served from 6:00-6:30pm.
