On Thursday, November 7th, the RRHS senior girls Owls traveled to play at NorWOSSA. NorWOSSA is the final playoffs of all high school sports in Northwestern Ontario. Only the top three standing teams in each sport get to play at NorWOSSA. The Senior Girls Owls were one of the teams.
The Senior Girls team consists of seven players, Jenni Stafford, Alicia Giles, Marion Reimund, Jessica Creason, Trienke van Rozen, Laurie Brown, and Brooke Ewald. Their coach is teacher John LaPlante.
The Owls have played twelve games since the season started, and were good enough to have ranked in the top three. They have played the Sioux Lookout Warriors, the Thomas Aquinas Saints, the Red Lake Rams, the Atikokan Voyagers, the Ignace Falcons, and the White Fish Bay Winter Hawks. The girls played each team twice, and triumphed in eight games out of twelve. They only lost two games to the Warriors, one game to the Saints, and one game to the Voyagers.
The deciding game that the Owls played, was against the Atikokan Voyagers, who they had previously lost to by one point. The game was played at home on November 1, and was well attended by both students and parents. The bleachers roared each time one of the Girls sunk a basket or stole the ball from one of the Voyagers. It was an intense game, and was tied by the end. In the four minute overtime, the Owls prevailed by three points. Many of the girls cried with relief when the game was over. They were going to NorWOSSA!!
NorWOSSA was held in Kenora at the Thomas Aquinas High School. Many people showed up to show their support for their team. The Owls played a strong game, but in the end fell to the Sioux Lookout Warriors. The Girls came home defeated but not broken, they knew they had played well.
