Tipping fees to be charged at Rainy River landfill site

Effective August 1st, taking out the trash in Rainy River will get a little bit more expensive.
A half ton full of items to be deposited at the dump will cost a residential hauler $5 and a commercial hauler $10. However, if the person doing the hauling is a ratepayer in the town of Rainy River the $5 residential fee will be waived.
From a half ton to 3 ton truck the fees will be $10 for residential and $20 for commercial. Over 3 tons the fee is $40 per load. Councillor Gerry Marchuk said that the population of Dawson rises dramatically in the summer and that the dump receives a considerable increase in usage. “It is about time we started getting some money for it,” said Marchuk.
Councillor Glen Armstrong said that he does not see very many people paying the fees unless Dawson does something to their landfill site. “People will use the Sleeman dump rather than pay,” said Armstrong.
Councillor Lance Lindal said that if anyone has problems with the rates they can speak to the clerk at the town hall.
Fired up over agreement
The town council had heated discussions over the fire protection of Dawson Monday evening.
Council has been exploring the option of amalgamating fire departments with Dawson. During that time the previously existing agreement that saw Rainy River provide fire protection to Dawson residents if the need arose was extended.
However, the town has not been paid for that protection and some councillors felt that the money should be received before extending the services.
When all was said and done council opted to send Dawson a letter requesting the money for the first 6 months of the year and to ask if they would be interested in purchasing an extension.
Dog Days of Summer
Council passed a new dog bylaw Monday night and repealed any previous dog bylaws.
In the new one they provided for the enforcement of it by the newly hired enforcement person, Lisa Marchuk.
Dogs must be licensed at a fee of $12 if they are not fixed or $5 if fixed and wear a tag.
Dogs running at large may be picked up by Marchuk and if there is no identification the dog may be sold, disposed of or destroyed after 72 hours.
People failing to have a dog tag will be fined up to $150. A fine of $50 is also applicable for contravening any part of the bylaw.
Dogs will not be allowed in the park or the cemetery and all poop must be scooped when a dog goes on someone else’s property.
