First Nations sign historic educations agreement with government
News Release
Chiefs of eight Fort Frances area First Nations and the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Robert D. Nault today singed an Education Agreement-in-Principle (AIP).
The AIP sets the groundwork for the negotiation of a Final Agreement through which participating First Nations can make their own laws with respect to primary, elementary and secondary education for members living on-reserve. This historic Agreement is one of the first of it’s kind in Ontario.
A Final Agreement on education will enhance participating First Nations’ abilities to determine their own future and to deliver culturally relevant education programs and services through their own education laws and institutions. Self-government agreements such as this promote a new relationship between First Nations governments and the Government of Canada. The Province of Ontario while not participating in these negotiations, has been kept appraised of developments in the negotiations.
“After several years of negotiations with Canada, we are delighted to sign this agreement. The great work and perseverance of all those involved has produced a document that will undoubtedly change the landscape of First Nations education,” said Richard Bruyere, Executive Director for the Fort Frances Chiefs Secretariat. “Today signifies a monumental step for our First Nations people, and we enter into this agreement with great excitement and confidence.”
“The government recognizes the important role of education in shaping a positive future for First Nations communities in general and their youth, in particular,” said Robert Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. “The agreement demonstrates that the Government of Canada is committed to working in partnership with First Nation people to build stronger communities and strengthen their capacity to govern themselves through control of their education systems and institutions. Improving First Nation education is key to improving the quality of life for First Nations people living on reserves.”
The parties are now developing a workplan for negotiations toward a Final Agreement.
