Four seeking to be Emo Fair Queen
Sarah Trimble is 15 years old and she resides in Emo with her parents and her younger sister, Haley. She also has an older brother, Andrew.
She enjoys dancing, drawing and fishing, and plans to attend the Toronto School of Art when she graduates from Fort Frances High School. She will be entering Grade 10 in the fall.
Trimble volunteers at the Emo Speedway each Saturday evening and also enjoys listening to music and spending time with her friends.
Trimble is sponsored by Tom Veert Contracting Ltd.
Taylor Pelepetz, 15, has a passion—a passion for dance.
“I absolutely love to dance,” she said.
The Emo resident has been taking lessons from Darcie Schulz at the “Dancin’ with Darcie” Dance Studio in International Falls for 10 years. For the last two of those years, she has also been a dance assistant, helping teach the young children.
She dreams of one day dancing on Broadway or attending The Juilliard School, a prestigious performing arts conservatory in New York City.
Pelepetz also enjoys swimming, camping, reading, watching TV, spending time with friends and family, and cheering on her dad at the Emo Speedway every Saturday night.
She counts her family as having five members, including herself, her younger brother, Brandon, her parents, Dwayne and Sue, and “the queen of the house,” Boots—the family cat.
Pelepetz said she has not decided yet which career she is going to pursue but is looking at a few options, including marine biologist, lawyer, chef, fashion designer or journalist.
Her sponsor is Norlund Oil Ltd.
Marissa Kinnear is the youngest of the four contestants and a young woman with a wide variety of interests.
The 14-year-old Emo resident’s hobbies range from music—singing and playing her guitar—to sports such as volleyball, soccer and hockey, to photography, to “anything new that requires a challenge.”
She is also very clear on what she dislikes—“dishes, bugs, bullies and homework.”
Kinnear said she enjoys volunteering in her community during her free time. She has fond memories of her time volunteering with the Emo Novice Rockets girls’ hockey team this past season.
“This winter, I learned that there is a lot more than meets the eye when you are teaching kids about the great game of hockey,” she said, adding that what is even more important is “all the things that you can learn from the kids themselves.”
Kinnear will be entering Grade 9 in the fall at the Fort Frances High School. When she graduates she hopes to attend a culinary arts college to train to be a chef. She dreams of someday opening her own restaurant.
Daughter of Tammy and Allen Kinnear, Marissa has a younger brother, Carter, and an older sister, Tasha, who is also a fellow contestant.
Kinnear’s sponsor is Dimit Bus Lines Ltd.
Tasha-Lynn McNally, the oldest of the contestants at 16, has interests as widely varied as her sister, Marissa.
The daughter of Tammy and Allen Kinnear and the late Keith McNally, she enjoys reading, drawing, writing poetry, playing her violin-which was given to her by her great-grandfather-listening to music, learning to drive and spending time with family.
She has also been learning to play the French horn in her music classes at Fort Frances High School.
McNally said she enjoys many sports, including basketball, volleyball, swimming, badminton, fishing and curling. Her hope is to join the Muskie girls’ curling team in the fall, but it won’t be at the expense of academics. Her grades are important to her, she said, and she works very hard to achieve them.
Like her younger sister, McNally enjoys volunteering, having helped out at hockey tournaments and the Emo Library. She is currently volunteering as a lap counter at the Emo Speedway.
McNally’s career goal to become a teacher comes from strong personal experience with the impact a teacher can have in a student’s life.
“I have had a teacher who helped me through thick and thin and I hope some day that I will be able to do the same for someone else,” she said.
McNally said she hopes this contest will help her to “grow as a person.”
Her sponsor is The Borderland Racing Association.
